Burnley started the first half well creating some chances, with both Paterson and Stanislas threatening. But Derby however slowly got back into the game, passing the ball neatly and started to create some chances. 17 year old Will Hughes volleyed from a corner but Lee Grant the former Rams man saved well, Craig Bryson also had a chance but his effort was no harm for Grant. Derby finally got their goal in the 20th minute with Jamie Ward scoring, the goal was deserved for the Rams who were creating more and more chances as the game went on. Derby should have been 2-0 up but they weren't, 1.2m striker Sammon was unable to convert for the Rams. Burnley got an equaliser with Charlie Austin scoring a good goal, he took the ball down well and converted it in to the back of the net. Burnley were nearly 2-1 up before the break but the bar denied them from taking the lead, both teams went in level 1-1 at half time.

The second half was a frustrating one for Derby with them having most of the chances but were unable to convert them. Bryson had the best chance out of the lot, with him starting a neat move but was unable to slot the ball home. Jamie Ward and Will Hughes also had chances for Derby but couldn't find the back of the net. Hendrick nearly scored for the Rams but was inches away from Jamie Wards cross, the fans were starting to think was this a day where the players couldn't convert their chances away. Conner Sammon was struggling in front of goal and couldn't seem to find his feet, Theo Robinson replaced the former Wigan man and looked lively, he sprinted passed Jason Shackell who had a quiet game and then had a shot but Derby were still level. But then Burnley snatched a late winner with Charlie Austin rising to header the ball home, sending the Burnley fans crazy. Derby could have got a dramatic equaliser but Buxton was unable to send the ball home, Burnley cleared from under their crossbar.
