What England need to do to compete with the big boys

England's Euro 2012 campaign came to an end yesterday as they were beaten my an excellent Italy. Pirlo was outstanding for Italy passing the ball around for fun, his highlight pass was a great ball to Ballotelli who just couldn't finish. So why are England so far behind the likes of Spain and Germany? This is because they lack creativity in the centre of the park, they are unable to keep the ball for most of the game and just do not score enough goals.

Creative players
Do England actually have a creative player? Well yes they do but not a lot, Paul Scholes and Jack Wilshere are only England's best creative Midfielders at the moment, why is it that the likes of Spain and Germany have a lot of creative players, it is because their players don't just play in Spain or Germany they play in England,Italy and France? This is good for the national side if their players play in different countries because their players can learn more. If you look at England's squad at the euro's none of them played out of Europe which is a concern. The midfield players I would have took to the euro's would have been

- Paul Scholes Like Pirlo yesterday he is getting old, but he can still pass the ball and unlock the opposition   defence.

-Jack Wilshere This lad has bags of energy and is able to pass the ball into a good area when he can, surely he will feature for Roy Hodgson when he is back from injury.

-Joe Cole Yes this might come as a surprise to some people, but he has got experience abroad. At the moment he is play in France and might have learned more things whilst he has been there.

More attacking threat
After being knocked out of the Euro's one of the main surprises about England was their poor attacking threat, against Italy they only managed to have 1 shot on goal, which in the quarter final is awful. The likes of Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young did not impress for me, I was picking them to be one of the best players in the tournament before it started, but however they were one of the worst. Theo Walcott and Andy Carroll should have started more games for England after having amazing matches against Sweden, where Theo Walcott managed to get a goal and assist one, and Andy Carroll managed to bag himself a goal too. One of the main questions was did Roy play Gerrard out of position? Gerrard for me wasn't at his best, this was because he was played out of position and had to defend for most of the game, when England did try to attack they lacked pace. My starting 11 for the Italy would have been,

My starting XI                                                                      Roy Hodgson starting XI

                         Hart                                                                                 Hart
Johnson      Terry     Lescott    Cole                              Johnson     Terry           Lescott     Cole
Walcott     Parker      Ox-Chamberlain                          Milner      Parker          Gerrard    Young
                    Gerrard                                                                    Welbeck       Rooney
           Welbeck
                       Carroll

For me Roy selected a far too defensive line up, which let the other team attack and keep the ball for long periods of the game. My starting XI shows that England would be able to attack more and show the opposition what they are all about, I wouldn't start Young or Milner on the wings because I don't think they showed enough threat in the Euro's against any teams, but Walcott and ox-Chamberlain did when they had the chance.
